Pandora wants to create a "Podcast Genome Project"
CEO Roger Lynch has told Variety that he wants to create “the equivalent of the podcast genome project”. You may recall that the Music Genome Project is the system that Pandora uses to classify and organize music so the ‘equivalent’ for podcasts would be something like adding metadata to podcasts and episodes such as what’s the topic and who hosts the show, which would enable Pandora to have a knowledge graph of the podcast ecosystem that could power recommendations and curated playlists.
I think that 2018 is going to be the year we see the big music streaming companies really push into podcast discovery. Remember that Apple bought and shuttered PopUp Archive, who ran Audiosear.ch that automatically transcribed audio and made a searchable database of podcast content? I expect Apple will use that tech to improve search, discovery and recommendations in its Podcast app.
